Hi! My husband and I have chosen a girls name but are wondering about the spelling! Annika or Anika?

Our surname is Sullivan. We love the name but I am just putting out feelers to see what the public thinks about the spelling. I would appreciate any feedback about preference. We are pronouncing the name "A (as in ant) -KNEE-CA".

Thanks in advance!

Hi! My husband and I have chosen a girls name but are wondering about the spelling! Annika or Anika?
depends where the stress is

if it's AN-ik-a then it should be spelled Annika

if it's an-EEK-a then it should be Anika

Reply:That's a nice, distinctive name choice. I really like it.

I like both spellings. The way you want to pronounce the name is a bit different to the way I've heard it pronounced: ahn-nee-ka or ann-ee-ka.

I would go with Annika Sullivan. This spelling makes the name look more balanced with your surname. I think that it looks more aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, this spelling is used in Swedish, Dutch, Finnish, German and English, while Anika is used in German, Dutch and Danish. So the Annika spelling is the more common spelling globally. If you would like to look at this on a map, I'd suggest you type the name into the search engine on this website:http://www.babynamemap.com/ It will inform you of exactly how popular this spelling of the name is, and the areas of the world in which it is popular.

If the map does not load for you:

Interestingly, Annika has become quite popular in North Dakota (USA) and Alberta (Canada), and is relatively common in Montana (USA), Minnesota (USA) and British Columbia (Canada). It is uncommon in Australia, UK, Sweden, Norway and Belgium. On the other hand, Anika is less popular in the US (it's considered common in New York) and Canada (considered popular in British Columbia and Alberta), and is the only other countries that it is ranked for popularity are Australia, UK and Belgium. Overall, Annika is the more popular spelling in the English speaking world, ranking at #379 in the US, #89 in Canada, #649 in South Australia, and #720 in the UK. By comparison Anika is ranked at #510 in the US, and is not currently in the top 1000 names in Canada.
Reply:with your pronuciation it is a bit confusing with the K in it. if you want the long e sound i would spell it more like Aneeka or something like that. if you want it pronouced as Ann spell it Annika but it you want it like you would say On spell it Anika. right now anything really goes, just spell it like you want to. :o)
Reply:I like the name and I think you should spell it Anika for that pronounciation. Annika I would tend to think would be pronounced differently if that makes sense. I cant really describe it. I just think that you would get the pronounciation you are after with the first spelling

Hope that helps
Reply:in my language/proper slavic, the name should be spelt Anika as that is its original and official form (seeing as its a slavic name). Annika is just a Westernized version of it so im pretty sure id rather prefer to call my child the proper way. Anika.
Reply:If you're saying it ah-NEE-ka, I vote Anika. Otherwise, I would go with Annika, because I like the look of both names having double letters, and because it's the more common spelling of the name.
Reply:I would say Anika, because I would read it pronounced how you say you guys are pronouncing it, Annika I'd want to pronounce more like Ann-i-ka, and It's always frustrating when people miss pronounce your name...
Reply:Anika

Annika is pronounced ANN-ICK-UH
Reply:Annika
Reply:Annika
Reply:I like Anika. They may mispronounce either though. At first I thought it would be Ann - I (i like stick) - ka.
Reply:annika- the n is stressed
Reply:Anika. It looks funny with 2 "n"s
Reply:I prefer it spelt Anika
