The prefix "mal" usually means bad or wrong.. such as "malpractice", or "malfunction", or "malnourished".. so I would not use it in a name where I had any choice over spelling.
Reply:I don't like it. Also, I'd spell it Melaina, which is the proper spelling. It's the original Greek form of Melanie. I like Melanie better.
