What is the tradtional spelling of this name?
Catherine is the english traditional spelling
Reply:It's not that simple.

The name is so ancient that it predates modern English. In the original, it's probably Greek - and could be related to Hekaterine, from the goddess Hecate. The Romans linked it to the Greek word for pure - katharos, and that's the most common attribution.

Catherine and Katherine appear throughout the historical record. Henry VIII married three Catherines - sometimes they're all spelled with a C, other times with a K; sometimes only Catherine of Aragon gets a C because the Italian and Spanish versions of the name almost always start with a C.

I believe there was no equivalent "C" sound in early English - and there still isn't one in most Slavic languages. So Katherine with a K is also widely used.

Today, Katherine is fashionable while Catherine is on the decline; but for baby boomers and earlier, the opposite was true. It's probably because earlier Catherines were Cathy; today Katherine is likely nicknamed Kate.

In my case, my family is Italian, so I'm more familiar with Catherine - actually, my family used Catharine, as the closest version to Catarina, the Italian name.

And Katharine Hepburn inspired many spellings of that name.

So ... while the "ryn" ending is probably not original, the C/K question and even the ther/thar is open to much debate.
Reply:Katharine Aragon was an English woman.

Catherine was a czarina in Russia.

Kathryn is an American derivative of Katherine/Katharine.

Katherine is the most popular. I see way more Katherine's than I see with any other spellings.

I think Catharine is pretty rare.

I would say Catherine and Katherine are both the traditional spellings. Pretty much C's and K's are interchangeable and it's always been that way. It depends one what culture the name comes from, as well. A lot of names start in one culture but spread so quickly to other cultures that you can't figure out where it originated from. It also depends on the language it came from before it began to fit into English.

I don't understand the point in the extra middle "e" or "a", as it's never pronounced. I just noticed that.
Reply:It is spelled many different ways because of different language influences. Starting with C or K depends entirely what language was being used (for instance, Scandinavians would tend to use K while English-speaking countries use either). Pretty much any familiar spelling you see is a correct spelling.

Kathryn is way more popular in MN, while Katherine is what is popular in Mass. today while prior to the 1970s, it was Catherine.
Reply:I think the name itself is traditional but so are many of the spellings you have there. I work at a retirement community and see women in their 80's and 90's with it spelled Kathryn, Katherine, and of course Catherine.
Reply:I'm pretty sure it's Katherine, I have a cousin named Catherine and we have a heck of a time finding her name on things. We always find "Katherine."
Reply:I think it's Catherine from like English. But Katherine is also the traditional way too, i think. But in my opinion Katherine is the best spelling.

Reply:I'm gonna assume it's Katherine (Like Katherine of Aragon). Catherine is the popular modernised spelling of her name, but in most professional publications it's spelled Katherine.
