Why do parents-to-be think that by fudging the spelling of a name it makes it more unique?

Because in most cases, I think it looks trashy. Like you didn't know how to spell the name properly.

I'm all up for beautiful names, but for instance when 'Christina' is changed to 'Krystyna' it just seems a little bit wacked out.

Anyone else agree?

Why do parents-to-be think that by fudging the spelling of a name it makes it more unique?
I agree with you, it looks trashy or stupid. If you want to be different then choose a name that is unusual, don't screw up the spelling of a common name. Some names have several acceptable spellings obviously, like Carrie. I'm talking about spellings, like Abbygaile, Kyrstea, Jesika, Jaydn, Jaxon.
Reply:I understand where you're coming from. I was the person who said I like Jaxon as well as Jackson. I don't look at spelling it Jaxon and say "Oh how creative am I", I just like it spelled that way. I know it doesn't make the name more unique. So yes, I agree that when you take a name like Christina and spell it Krystyna, some will make judgments that you're not very educated. However, my friend just had a baby and chose the Carlie spelling instead of the traditional Carly spelling and I think that it looks fine. By the same token, just because you spell your child's name correctly doesn't mean you're highly educated. Interesting question.
Reply:I agree to an extent. My name is Tabitha, nickname Tabby. However, I hate the generic spelling. I spell it Tabi.

But i do agree because if the kid wants to write it uniquely he/she will! It doesn't make it unique it makes it trashed. There is no room for improvement if the parents already messed with the spelling. I say let the kids spell it their way as they get older. Don't mess with a beautiful name unless your the one paying the price. and i don't mean having to listen to your kid whine about the spelling of their name the price.
Reply:I also tend to like the traditional spelling of names. not only because it is easier to pronounce, but because you don't want your child to be stereotyped as "trashy" or uneducated. I am not saying all people who mix up the spelling of their child's name are uneducated, but it is a common stereotype and I would not want to do anything to put my child at any kind of disadvantage.

Besides, I think I would feel a little more secure with Dr. Christina ____

than dr. Krysteena _______, but maybe thats just me.
Reply:I do agree to some extent. Like my name is Alicia, and I have seen it spelled many different ways which are all normal, but I met someone who spelled it Ellyshia. I apologize if anyone on here spells their name that way, but to me that's just trying too hard to be different.

However, I did spell my son's name a bit different than the popular spelling. His name is Ayden. I liked it better than Aiden because there is a g in our last name, and I think it looks good to have the swoop of the y and the swoop of the g when you write his name. It's symmetrical. Plus, I somehow feel like Ayden looks more masculine than Aiden. But, as my aunt continually pointed out, he will be spelling his name for people his whole life.
Reply:Hahaha! I'm in an office and I just busted out laughing when I read the title.

I so agree with you! Just because you change the i to a y or the ck to an x doesn't make your name original. It just makes you look like some barefoot mama. I just saw a post that had Jaxon instead of Jackson. Or Bryson instead of Brice. It's like, okay, you can't just throw -on, -in, -en on the end of every name and call it unique!
Reply:i do preffer traditional spellings but i think it is just to make a more well used name unique. but i'd hate it because everyone would right it how it is more commonly spelt and you'd forever have to be correcting them... And also sometimes it just looks pretentious! But some are okay just subtle changes like an "I" to a "Y" and simmilar.

like Kerry to Kerrie isn't bad

Or Hayley to Hayleigh

but when it gets silly like insteas of Catherine to Kathourine... (just makes me think Urine?!?. ewww!)

or megan to Meeghane

those names are nice as they are! leave them alone!
Reply:i find these answers absolutely ridiculous. how can you judge someone by the way their name is spelled get for freaking real. there is nothing wrong with "fudging" a name to make it look cute and unique. the same old spelling over and over gets absolutely boring. If you are a person who judges someone because their name is spelled different thats pretty sad.
Reply:I agree-i guess it is their way of trying to have a unique name-but it isn't at all-that kid will grow up with the humiliation of having a whacked out name. My friend has a boy named Aydan-he is almost 4 and now she wants to go have his name legally changes to spell- Ayden....she's an idiot too!
Reply:Well I think its the parents decision to name the child what ever they want. Who are we to judge? It is crazy to me that you are really bothered by how someone else's spells their child's name....a person that has nothing to do with you. You really need to worry about yourself hun and stop making this a problem.

I mean I was born in the 80s and my mother named me Breonna...a totally different way of the traditional spelling.

So was my mother tacky for spelling my name like that?
Reply:I hate spellings that are so off the wall you have to think for a minute before you realize what the name should actually be. Examples: Jaymes, Laiken, Nathalie, Tomas, Amandah, Jaidyn, Stefunie, etc.

They're horrible, trashy, and not "unique" - the parents just look illiterate.
Reply:Well I think it depends on the name. My friend named her daughter Kathryn and i think it's pretty. Then again my son goes to school with an Elisha that is pronounced like Elijah. I though it was a girl pronounced like Alicia. But I hate like half the names people give their kids anyway, lol.
Reply:When I tell people I named my daughter Autumn I did not expect to hear "how did you spell it?" and every time I answer "the right way".

As I have mentioned here before I don't like names that look like they were invented to win at a game of scrabble.
Reply:On some names I like it on some I don't. My daughters name is Karli which has probably 10 different spellings. Some people don't like it but I do. I like the name Madelyn because I like it pronounced with the lyn instead of line.
Reply:I totally agree. I think it ends up looking ridiculous. I think the parents are probably just so overjoyed with how wonderful their baby is going to be that they get carried away. Who can blame them? But yeah, it's very childish.
Reply:Yea, I agree.. The worst part is when they have like 8 possible spellings .. and phonetically half of them don't even pronounce to give you the name they are hoping for, ha.
Reply:It's not unique you are right, it's Chavvy %26amp; Trashy,

The child will start life with a disadvantage, ( as most teachers think that these names are chavvy names to )
Reply:Yes like my names Callie. Some people tell me, you should spell your name Calleigh! I was disgusted! And Haley is the same way Haleigh. Calleigh Joyei is not right lol. Callie Joy is much better.
Reply:In some cases it's weird. Like Christina to Krystyna is weird! But Christina 2 Kristina isn't soooo bad
Reply:Amen girl...its like they are trying SO hard to be cool maybe cause their not? You know what else i noticed? All those weird spelling name moms shove their kids into beauty pageants and modeling...Scary.
Reply:I totally agree. Like really, Emily=Emmaleigh? Nuh uh. :)
Reply:I konw! Like If a name ends in LEE then they all go "OH Maybe we should spell it like LEIGH instead of Lee"

Like:

Hailey: Haileigh

Emliy: Emileigh

Riley: Ryleigh %26lt;--- Big one!
