I want to change the spelling of my name, where do I go and what can happen?

Where do I go to change my FIRST name or the spelling? And did anyone here do the same thing? What potential problems I should be aware of ? Thank you

Also do you have an idea how much time it takes and how much money it costs?

I want to change the spelling of my name, where do I go and what can happen?
You need to speak to an attorney, but you would have to change all legal stuff;a big hassle!
Reply:well I always wanted to do something like that, but if you want it done legal then you have to go to court I am not sure what dept, but that is what I was always told
Reply:You can change the spelling of your name,But be careful about the meaning after you change.
Reply:Consult an attorney. A simple change like that has to go all the way to the feds. It will have a noticable impact on your future, social security etc.
Reply:Change your reall name ? Nolo Law for All provides a wealth of information on legal name changes in the United States. In most states you can legally change your name by usage only. However, an official court document may make it much easier to get everyone to accept your new name. Restrictions on name choices include not choosing a name with fraudulent intent, not interfering with the rights of others, not using a name that would be intentionally confusing (for example a number or punctuation mark), and not choosing names that are racial slurs, threatening or obscene.
Reply:You have to petition a court for a name change which would require filing papers, giving the judge a good reason for the change(not running from criminal record or debt collectors), and placing an add in the local newspaper notifying collection agencies and others of the name change.

I would say that you could do it yourself(but some people are legally impaired). So without a lawyer I would expect to spend as little as 25 as much as 100 (depending on state). With a lawyer it could range from 250 to whatever they will charge you.
Reply:It does not matter whether you are changing your first or last name, or both. It will cost the same and you will have the same problems. I did it years ago for around $400, but I don't know what it would cost now. Initially, I did not have any problems, but post-9/11 I have to jump through hoops to prove my identity every time I renew my drivers license or have a credit check. Also, I recently got married and took my husband's last name making everything even MORE difficult. Everything I do and everywhere I go I have to show my original birth certificate, name change judgment, and now marriage license.
Reply:You need to go to your clerk of courts. it will cost about a hundred dollars.
Reply:The only thing you can do is go to the court house and you will have to go in front of a judge. He/she will determine whether or not you will be aloud to change it. My cousin changed the spelling of his name because every 1 was saying it wrong and miss spelling it all the time. The judge asked him how he would like it spelled and the judge agreed to it. There is no harm in trying. Just remember that every state and county for that matter is diffrent. Good luck!
Reply:You would have to go to court to have it done. Here is a website I found:

You must consult a lawyer, make an affidavit and get it published in the official gazette or a national news paper.

Cost depends where do you live, in Asian countries it may cost you money, minimum, equivalent to $10 or so. In other countries it depends upon the quality of a lawyer.
Reply:just change it ; file a change with social security and then use the revised card to get it changed on driver's license; then have it changed on all other documents ; go to bank and change your signature in person
Reply:Apply to Births, Deaths and Marriages to change your name by Depol. Fill out the appropriate form, should only cost you around $80.00 and takes around 2 weeks to process. If you are over 18yrs. you can do it all by yourself, otherwise you'll need parent/guardian consent. Goodluck!
